Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association (SAVNA) is a non-profit
home health agency located within the city limits of Salem, Ohio. SAVNA
currently provides services to all of Columbiana County and the lower
five townships of Mahoning County. We have been providing services to
the community for over 85 years. The agency was started under the auspices
of the National Red Cross in 1919, with the goal and purpose of visiting
the sick and elderly community members. In 1950, the Salem Home
Nursing Services incorporated as a non-profit agency. With the establishment
of a Board of Directors one registered nurse, they began serving patients.
In 1959, care was extended to include the residents of Perry Township.

With the increased concern for providing care for the elderly and the
socio-economically disadvantaged, Salem Home Nurse Association became
Medicare certified in 1966 and changed the name
to Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association. By expanding services
to include all fourteen townships in Columbiana County and the five lower
townships in Mahoning County, the agency showed phenomenal growth from
1968 to 1988. In 1968 SAVNA made 200 visits, this number increased to
over 16,000 in 1988 and expansion resulted in new areas of expertise in
the fields of Physical Therapy, Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy and
Home Health Aides.
In the fall of 2002 Salem Area Visiting Nurses purchased
the YWCA property on N. Lincoln Ave. The property was revamped
and a 18400 Sq foot single story building was erected that houses 4 different
business, The Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association, The Salem Area Adult
Daycare, Home Care Advantage and The Lincoln Learning Center. By providing
access to these 4 services we were able to better serve all members of
Columbiana County and their caregivers.

As more and more people were being treated with acute hospitalizations
for disease management, followed by home health services, SAVNA continued
to see enormous growth and expertise. By obtaining accreditation by the
Joint Commission of Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO)
in 1994 and with 22,687 visits during 2003, SAVNA is regarded as a leader
in home health care services in northeast Ohio. This was accomplished
by the foresight of its leaders and dedication of its staff. SAVNA has
grown and adapted to the regulations and reimbursement cutbacks enforced
by Medicare and other 3rd party payers. SAVNA
provides services to the community of:
Skilled Nursing, Home Infusion Services, Cardiac Home Care, Diabetes Management,
Maternal/Child Health, Pediatric Services, Restorative Nursing, Behavioral
Health Program, Lab Services, Home Health Aides, Physical, Occupational
and Speech Therapies, and Nutritional Support.
